A design alchemy - by Kelly Wearstler

If you look up in the Cambridge dictionary, home is defined as “the house, apartment, etc. where you live, especially with your family."

Michael Allen Fox, author of “Home: A very short introduction”, has described home as a gathering place, shelter, and sanctuary, providing escape from the business and intrusiveness of the world.

For Rob Scheinberg and his wife Danielle Eden-Scheinberg, escape was found in the earthy, Bauhaus-inspired aesthetic of their youth and they knew exactly that only Kelly Wearstler, the revolutionist of modern American design, could make this old European feel to be revived in their Toronto home.

Having Wearstler to be their interior designer was not as easy as it may seem. “It’s like having Beyonce come to your kid’s bar mitzvah” is how Rob described the long adventure of their persistence. After the first rejection, the couple used their connection by asking the help of a friend who had an in with Wearstler, but having a company to run and plenty of projects on her table, Kelly rejected again.

here was no option for the “we don’t take no for an answer” couple but to fly to California and meet with Kelly in person. Some things are just meant to be and Wearstler, moved by their action, impressed by the couple’s knowledge in design and sharing the same love for animals with the couple, decided to take the matter in her hands.

It was a full four inspirational years of texting and visits to the sight. While Kelly saw the traditional walls transform into an oasis of rounded edges, sweeping archways and the enormous windows that overlook the grounds and their 80-foot-tall trees, she started to understand the world her customers wanted to build together, so she began to do what she knows best, the hunting for vintage pieces and new commissions from dealers and artisans.

The library’s parquet flooring by Exquisite Surfaces, the Kooji pendant in the living room, the Ralph Pucci stools in the kitchen and the “oh so comfortable” sofa in the lounge and bar area, give the splash of boldness needed. And to add some more, her team customized many items, including covering vintage dining chairs in one of her own fabrics and crafting a low-to-the-ground primary bed whose headboard stretches well beyond the width of the mattress.

The old soul Toronto home has now a new spirit. Both modern and warm, the revived home reflets who its owners are, because Kelly is a firm believer that home is who you are. While we, can’t help but believe that a beautifully redefined home is an enduring testament to the magic that unfolds when dreams find their perfect design.
