Now jokes (or not) aside, let’s give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar; Lorik Cana is more than a sexy face. It is one of the most talented Albanian football players, a role model for youngsters who aspire a career in football, a patriot, and a dedicated father and husband.
Being a successful professional in football, or any field for that matter, is deeply rooted in being a role model human being across various aspects of life. Beyond athletic prowess, true greatness in football requires discipline, integrity, resilience, and empathy. These qualities extend beyond the field, influencing interactions with teammates, coaches, fans, and the broader community. And Lorik Cana truly does that!
Cana was not a football player by accident. Originally from Gjakova, his father, Agim Cana, was also a football player. For football players, it is the local teams that pave the way for their career.
In 1997, Cana became part of Dardania Lausanne, a grassroots football club established by the Albanian community in Lausanne. Under the guidance of his father, he honed his skills there until 2000, when Paris Saint-Germain noticed his talent and recruited him.
Cana showcased his talents in elite football leagues across France, England, Italy, and Turkey, representing esteemed clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Sunderland, Galatasaray, Lazio, FC Nantes, and Olympique de Marseille. Additionally, he left an indelible mark on the Albanian national team, earning the distinction of being their most capped player with 93 appearances from his debut in 2003 until his retirement in 2016. Initially deployed as a defensive and central midfielder, he later transitioned to the center-back position. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Albania’s debut at a major international tournament, UEFA Euro 2016 in France.
Lorik has always been a patriot as the love for your motherland is something you are born with and cultivated throughout the years. With citizenship in Albania, Switzerland, and France, Lorik Cana had the unique option to represent any of these nations. But he chose Albania. Opting for Albania, he debuted internationally at the youthful age of 19 in June 2003. His loyalty to Albania was unwavering as he went on to become the country’s most capped player, earning 93 appearances and assuming the role of captain in 2011.
In 2016, following his participation in UEFA Euro 2016, Lorik Cana bid farewell to his illustrious football career, announcing his retirement. However, his presence has always been strong. In 2017 Lorik Cana was officially presented by the President of the Albanian Football Federation as Grassroots Ambassador for our country.
