Nurturing Nature Within

The Bay Blue Residence: Landscape, Personality, and Design

Frank Lloyd Wright, an American architect and designer, once said: “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” Nature has a profound impact on our souls, prompting us individuals to seek closeness with it, fostering a deeper resonance and discovering new dimensions of balance and freedom. When direct access to nature proves challenging, we integrate its essence into our surroundings. Interior landscapes, akin to their outdoor counterparts, play a vital role in indoor environments. Incorporating flowers, living plants, and other natural elements in interior landscaping, elevates the aesthetic appeal of a room, mirroring the enhancement of an outdoor space.

The Bay Blue’s interior design is inspired in the shared desire to connect the property to the landscape. The owners aimed that with nature incorporated, they could bring a balanced calm to their private space. The interior design should however reflect who they are, two youthful and curious personalities. Each artwork, furniture and lighting were selected keeping that in mind.

Situated in the Bay area of San Francisco, there was no other way but for the owners to embrace their affinity for the color blue, weaving it throughout the home. From blue colour of walls, to blue elements in paintings and sculptures, the palette of complementary tones harmonizes with selected elements, incorporating contemporary artworks, rich tactile objects, and natural materials suitable for family life.

Big windows overlooking from the trees fill the house with natural light and that touch of nature. The owners, keen on a unique and personal touch, avoided traditional paths and engaged actively in the design process. Drawing from their extensive travels, the global influence is evident in vibrant and carefully selected pieces that complement the calming surroundings.

A consultative process led to the inclusion of newly acquired artworks and a mix of locally and globally sourced furniture, including both new and antique pieces. Integrating pre-loved finds ensures each space is a unique composition of form and texture, interacting with light, views, and the inherent use of the space. The owners aimed to re-enliven existing pieces, adding their own chapters and avoiding waste.
