The secret way to visit everything of Como

Suggested by Stylisphere

In the notion between elegance and slow living stands Como, a charming town in northern Italy. Lake Como, the town’s centerpiece, mirrors the surrounding peaks, creating a serene tableau. Typically in late spring or early summer the lake, in a “Y” shape, shimmers with radiant light. But do you really know why?

Arion, a minstrel of extraordinary talent, had once roamed the valleys, his melodies enchanting all who heard them. He fell deeply in love with Lario upon hearing her sing from beneath the lake’s surface. Their love, however, was forbidden by the gods, who decreed that a nymph and a mortal could never unite. Heartbroken, Arion poured his sorrow into his music, and Lario wept, her tears forming the crystal-clear waters of Lake Como. The gods, moved by their tragic love, bestowed a gift upon the lake: every hundred years, for a single night, the veil between the mortal world and the realm of spirits would lift, allowing Lario and Arion to reunite. On this night, the lake would glow with an ethereal light, and those fortunate enough to witness it could hear the hauntingly beautiful duet of the lovers.

Right before the wedding season, we, hopeless romantics, couldn’t resist booking a ticket to witness the magic of Lake Como firsthand. After a flight to Bergamo Airport and a scenic 1-hour and 20-minute drive, we found ourselves utterly captivated by the beauty of Como.

Here is our guide to help you experience the same enchanting feelings we had during our unforgettable stay.

Day 1

Arrival in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

They welcomed us with a small bottle of Bollicine by the brand Ferghettina in the room. The overall design of the Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, reflects a deep respect for the area’s cultural heritage and natural beauty. Housed in the restored 19th-century Villa Roccabruna, its beauty is timeless; with its neoclassical architecture, featuring grand columns, ornate detailing, and expansive terraces that offer panoramic views of Lake Como. Scattered throughout the property are beautifully restored historical buildings, each with a unique name, that house various amenities, including the luxurious spa, gourmet restaurants, and chic bars. Each structure retains its historical integrity while incorporating modern conveniences and design elements, ensuring a harmonious blend of the old and new. The hotel’s gardens are a highlight, sprawling over expansive, meticulously landscaped grounds that descend gracefully to the lake. These gardens, adorned with a variety of native plants, fragrant flowers, and ancient trees, provide the perfect scene for leisurely strolls. The mini port offered parking space for boats. The service was a top level one and for families with kids it offered kids club.

Do some meditation and the signature treatment called “The power of water”, for which you have to submit a request in advance.

The Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como is a member of the esteemed “Leading Spas” program, which is part of the “Leading Hotels of the World” organization, so wellness activities were organized throughout the whole day. The treatment we chose takes inspiration from the healing energy of water and includes an aromatherapy massage, exfoliation, another angelic touch massage and a facial treatment.

Enjoy an aperitif at the hotel’s Bistro, located at the main entrance by the lakeside.

Dinner at hotel’s restaurant L’Aria, which is featured in the Michelin Guide.

The hotel offers a golf cart shuttle service from your room to the restaurant nestled amidst lush greenery. L’Aria restaurant offers a fusion of Asian-inspired cuisine, featuring incredibly fresh seafood and subtly spicy sauces. The service is exceptional, and the view amidst the greenery and blooming flowers is simply perfect. Here, the style was more refined, comprising an elegant interior and a garden. Breakfast is served in the same restaurant.

Day 2

Visit of Bellagio

Bellagio, often hailed as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” holds the power to enchant with its picturesque streets, charming cafes, and stunning views. The town of Bellagio on Lake Como inspired the creation of the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The Bellagio Las Vegas, known for its luxurious accommodations, elegant design, and iconic dancing fountains, takes inspiration from the charm and sophistication of its Italian namesake. While the architecture and atmosphere of the Bellagio Las Vegas are distinctly different from the quaint beauty of Bellagio on Lake Como, the name pays homage to the allure and prestige associated with the original town in Italy.

For a dose of culture, visit the iconic Villa Melzi Gardens, where manicured lawns, exotic plants, and scenic views await. Take a guided tour of the villa and its neoclassical chapel, adorned with exquisite frescoes and sculptures. Afterward, wander through the lush gardens, pausing to admire the ornate sculptures and tranquil ponds.

Have lunch at “Alle Darsene di Loppia”.

The last lunch order was placed at 14:30, but they were so gentle to take our order even though a little bit past the time. There was a simple courtyard with small tables. The food was meticulously prepared and made with very fresh ingredients. You’d be surprised how a place so simple in terms of design could serve such beautifully crafted dishes. There was also a very rich wine list.

After lunch, stroll along the lakeside promenade, soak in the serene beauty of Lake Como and admire the colorful boats bobbing in the water. Explore the narrow streets of the historic town center, lined with quaint shops selling artisanal crafts, local delicacies, and fashionable goods.

Head to Il Sereno Hotel.

At the bar, the Sri Lankan gentle barista, very fluent in Italian, will greet you with the welcoming tea. In the room, along with buckets of ice and a large bottle of Bollinger champagne there was also a panettone. The hotel includes only 30 suites, each designed with contemporary elegance and featuring private terraces, providing an intimate and exclusive experience.

Dinner at the Michelin-Star Restaurant of the hotel.

Impeccable service, stylish ambiance, and stunning lakeside setting further elevate the dining experience at Il Sereno. The wine list is very extensive, and for some important wines like Sassicaia, Tignanello, Masseto, and Brunello Biondi Santi, it includes impressive verticals.

Day 3

Have a boat tour and witness some of the most beautiful villas. Our skipper, Marko, was gentle and very well informed. He would give us information about each villa, while we would give him information about where to vacation in Albania.

Villa d’Este

Originally built in 1568 as a summer residence for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, but it later became the property of Princess Caroline of Brunswick in the early 19th century. Caroline was the estranged wife of the future King George IV of the United Kingdom. She purchased the villa in 1815 and renamed it Villa d’Este. During her time at the villa, she lived with her lover, Bartolomeo Pergami, who was a former equerry and colonel in Napoleon’s army. Princess Caroline’s ownership and her relationship with Pergami added to the villa’s storied history and contributed to its romantic and somewhat scandalous reputation during that era. It was converted into a luxury hotel in 1873. The gardens are particularly famous, featuring classical statues, fountains, and terraces that create a serene and picturesque setting. Our lovely Sara Hoxha was married in this hotel.

Villa Fontanelle

Versace’s villa, known as Villa Fontanelle, was purchased by the famous fashion designer Gianni Versace in 1977. Versace spent years restoring and decorating the villa, turning it into a lavish and opulent retreat that reflects his unique style. Villa Fontanelle has become a symbol of luxury and elegance, attracting numerous celebrities and high-profile guests over the years, also hosting the wedding of Le Bron James. After Gianni Versace’s tragic death in 1997, the villa remained in the family until it was eventually sold. The villa continues to be a private residence and a testament to Versace’s legacy in the world of fashion and luxury living.

Villa Matilde

The purchase of Villa Matilde by the Ferragnez, as the ex-couple is popularly known, has sparked significant interest in the media and among their followers. The villa is celebrated for its stunning architecture, elegant interiors, and breathtaking views of Lake Como.

Villa del Balbianello

The villa’s breathtaking landscapes and elegant architecture have made it a popular filming location, featured in movies like “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” and “Casino Royale.” It is also a sought-after wedding venue.

Villa Oleandra

George Clooney’s Villa Oleandra, an 18th-century property in Laglio on Lake Como, Italy, has become a renowned luxury retreat since his purchase in 2002. Clooney’s involvement with the local community and his influence on real estate values have further boosted the area’s profile.

Head to the airport.
