Stylisphere experiences "Mrizi i Zanave"

And decides if they would still recommend

In Albania’s vibrant tourist scene, there’s always that one foreign visitor we suggest a restaurant to. When they inquire about a traditional spot offering everything, “Mrizi i Zanave” naturally comes to mind. Last week, we played tourist in our own country and paid a visit to “Mrizi i Zanave”, and today we are sharing our verdict.

The architecture

The Mrizi i Zanave Hotel, designed by Plis Atelier, beautifully blends historical and contemporary architecture. The hotel features a glassed angle that completes the stoneworked ruins, where the suites are housed. This glassed angle provides a striking visual contrast. The hotel consists of two blocks: the main block with the distinctive glass angle and a larger, simpler block connected by an outdoor corridor. Each of the dozen rooms is named after an animal, enhancing the connection to nature. Inside, the wooden and traditional interiors create a cohesive blend with the rustic exterior. This design approach not only preserves the historical elements but also revitalizes them for modern use.

The canteen and working areas

Beyond the hotel, the canteen and working areas of Mrizi i Zanave add another layer to the visitor experience. Originally a prison during the communist regime, the site was transformed by Tharm Architects. They carefully rehabilitated the former prison of Fishtë, turning the cells into spaces for artisanal production. The farm now boasts modern facilities while respecting ancient traditions, including a cheese factory, winery, smokehouse for meats, and a kitchen for sun-dried tomatoes and homemade jams. These converted spaces highlight the innovative reuse of historical structures, aligning perfectly with the ethos of Mrizi i Zanave.

The service

At Mrizi you will experience quick, courteous, and friendly service, with occasional moments of humor for those light-hearted moments.

The restaurant

With the piano melody playing in the background, each dish was carefully served. Mrizi i Zanave offers a diverse menu featuring a wide range of traditional Albanian dishes. Whether for lunch or dinner, you can sample everything. Personally, we would prefer the dishes to be a bit warmer and with less oil. The prices were quite reasonable, considering the portion sizes of the dishes.

Would we still recommend “Mrizi i Zanave”? Absolutely. Where else can a tourist have the full experience?
