Built in 1972, Can Lis stands as a testament to the genius of Jørn Utzon, the renowned architect behind the Sydney Opera House. Situated on a steep cliff overlooking the sea in Porto Petro, Mallorca, this house was born out of Utzon’s desire to create a sanctuary for his family after leaving the Sydney Opera project in 1966.
One of the remarkable features of Can Lis is its reinterpretation of traditional Majorcan building methods and the use of local materials. Utzon seamlessly integrated the house into its surroundings, using Marés sandstone for the outer walls and columns, and Santanyi sandstone for the flooring, interior walls, and kitchen worktops. This connection to the local environment is further emphasized by the house’s design, which mirrors the natural contours of the cliffs, resembling a hand grabbing the rocky precipice.
The layout of Can Lis reflects Utzon’s belief that architecture should frame the day-to-day events of family life. Each of the five volumes of the house serves a specific function, from the blancherie for drying clothes to the small house for his children. The design process was meticulous, with Utzon conducting precise studies of the site’s potential before finalizing the plans with the help of local builder Jaime Vidal.
In 2011, the Utzon Foundation acquired Can Lis and undertook a comprehensive restoration of the house and grounds. Led by architect Lise Juel, the restoration aimed to preserve the integrity of Utzon’s design while updating the house to meet contemporary standards. The result is a seamless blend of old and new, where modern amenities coexist harmoniously with Utzon’s original vision.
