Feeling stucked in your small house? Consider enlisting the expertise of an interior design company to optimize your space, just like the young Italian-French couple did. After years of living abroad, they purchased a small classic apartment in a building near Piazzale Baracca/Corso Magenta and of which they entrusted the renovation to the Archventil studio.
In a compact 57 m² space, the traditional layout, untouched per the owners’ wishes, features preserved cementine floors, Italian herringbone parquet, and retained ceiling heights and plaster decorations, as highlighted by Elena Tomlenova of Archventil. The approach was subtle, as focusing on finishes and colors is crucial in compact spaces like this. Emphasizing natural light flooding in through the windows creates an illusion of spaciousness, giving it a touch of Parisian charm.
The entrance, in light tones, features suspended luminous elements, enhancing its height. Original doors are retained throughout. The heart of the house, a large, bright living room with arched niches and proportionate furnishings, underwent a harmonizing transformation. Existing rectangular elements were adjusted to match the corridor’s arches, painted black to fulfill the owner’s penchant for contrasts.
Through the doors, the kitchen unfolds—a custom-made, L-shaped design by Arredo3. “An essential structure,” notes Tomlenova, “where the worktop shelf doubles as a display for hand-painted French ceramics by the owner’s mother.” Opting for dark porcelain stoneware flooring, the design complements light walls and neutral tones in the kitchen, addressing the original floor’s dilapidated state.
In contrast to other rooms, the completely redesigned bathroom is a vibrant burst of color, with the owners embracing creativity. Tomlenova notes, “Starting from a specific hint of green in the original cement tiles, we chose petrol-colored Ceramica Vogue tiles for the walls. The white bathroom fixtures by Ceramica Cielo add a touch of contrast, creating a small, intimate, and welcoming space.”
